The Disaster Mitigation centre is basically a research centre and the nature of work includes, extension and dissimulation of information on mitigation of natural calamities. It is intended to develop a documentation centre and act as a clearing house for dissemination of information on disasters, and undertake extension activity on a modest scale to improve public awareness in the realness of inter-disciplinary social science Knowledge.

| It has undertaken surveys of successive major flood affected areas in A.P in 1977,1979,1980,1983,1984,1986,1990, and 1996and Communicated findings to the state government.
