Profile

Our Department was first started in erstwhile PG Center as department of Botany at Nallapadu, Guntur affiliated to Andhra University in 1967. In 1976 this PG Centre was elevated as Nagarjuna University. The strong foundation for the department in terms of its strength in teaching and research were laid down by former professors Viz., Prof. A.S. Rao, Prof. P.N. Rao, Prof. P.R.Mohan Rao, Prof. N. Lakshmi, Prof. D. Santha Kumari, Prof. T.N.Mary and Prof. K.V. Mallaiah. The legacy of the Department has been kept up through recruitment of highly qualified staff, succession of successful Heads of the department with efficient administrative activities and research scholars and students of outstanding quality. In 1992, Microbiology course was offered by the department and subsequently department was renamed as Botany and Microbiology in 2008. So far, 49 batches of M.Sc. Botany students and 22 batches of M.Sc. Microbiology students have been produced from this department. Botany as well as Microbiology being the essential branches of life sciences, offers bright opportunities for the students of M. Sc. Botany and M. Sc. Microbiology as well as the Research Scholars perusing M. Phil. and Ph.D. Degrees. Several research projects funded by CSIR, UGC, DNES, APSEB, ICAR,DAE,BSI,DBT and DST have been successfully completed by the faculty and several projects are ongoing in the department. Our department was strengthened with UGC NON-SAP, SAP & DST ?FIST. Majority of the Scholars were fellowship holders, carried out active research and received awards in scientific forums. Students of Botany and Microbiology were well settled in academic, scientific and Industrial sectors, in India and Abroad. Herbal Garden with nearly 300 varieties of medicinal plants is maintained in our Botanical Garden, serving the needs of researchers.

Research Activities    
Our faculty members are actively involving in the research activities in the following areas ? Bioactive compounds from microbes and plants including mangroves sources, physiological aspects of Plants Microbes, Stress Physiology, Orchid Biology, legume Rhizobium Interactions, Arbuscular Mycorhizae, Endophytes, Tissue Culture and Biodiversity & Conservation of mangrove ecosystem.
Academic Achievements    
In recognition of our faculty academic achievements UGC & DIST extended their funding support through SAP and FIST programs. Our Department organized 3 National and 1 International Conferences. Our Faculty members attended various International and National conferences and bagged some academic awards. Some of our faculty members attended international conference at USA, Canada, Srilanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Nepal etc.. Our faculty members are selected as fellow and associate fellows of AP Akademy of Sciences. Our senior Faculty member is appointed in NAAC peer team. One of the faculty is appointed as member, Peer Advisor Committee in IGNCA, New Delhi. Some of our faculty members are serving as editorial board members for National and International Journals. Our Faculty are acting as reviewers for various, International and National Journals.
